How We Respond - Climate Change Documentary Stories & Solutions - Dane County, Wisconsin
Technology won’t solve all our climate change problems. In fact, one of the most overlooked yet powerful ways to draw down carbon in the atmosphere is by simply using more intelligent farming practices like cover crops, pasture rotations with animals, composting, crop rotations, and other age old techniques that help build topsoil and soil biodiversity. (Learn more on regenerative agriculture here: https://regenerationinternational.org/why-regenerative-agriculture/) But that being said, sometimes super smart people with their hearts in the right place find a way to use technology to deal with some serious challenges we’re facing, like methane off gassing from landfills. Methane is a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, and it is created in abundance at landfills as all our waste breaks down. Often this gas is just burned off, but in Dane County, a group of elected officials and engineers came together to capture that methane and turn it into super clean burning compressed natural gas. This gas powers the fleet of trucks used by the city, while generating the city millions in revenue. Sound too good to be true? It’s not. But if you need convincing check out the film below in the How We Respond multimedia series, directed by the super talented Kika Tuff of Impact Media Lab, and produced by The American Association for the Advancement of Science. We helped to film, write, and edit the whole series, and I hope you find this piece inspiring! We all have a role to play, whether your a filmmaker, regenerative farmer, or a civil engineer, so stay active y’all!
